about

dissolving clarinet loops

composed, performed, recorded and produced by RBI
Commission by the City of Melbourne through SIGNAL (2019)

Dissolving Clarinet Loops by RBI (Ruby Willis) pays homage to Alvin Lucier’s acoustic music most famously demonstrated in I am Sitting in a Room. Lucier describes the process used to record a sound into a room which is then “played into a room again and again, until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves”. This process invites the listener to observe closely at which point the sound evolves into noise.

The primary sample used by RBI is a breathy repeated clarinet tone layered with overtones of the fundamental on a loop. While the final outcome is reminiscent of spectral and minimalist music, RBI is interested in exploring the coupling between idiosyncratic instrumental composition combined with Lucier’s acoustic processing.
